Infused water: the health benefits & recipes!

After seeing Lauren Conrad's blog post on some of her own recipes of infused water, I have been hooked! Not only because I am a massive Lauren Conrad fan and will swear by anything she says, but because these drinks are easy to make and taste freaking delicious! And bonus, have some extreme health benefits to them as well.

Firstly, infused water is simply just water, or a water based substance, marinated with a fruit/vegetable/herb which slowly releases natural nutrients into the water, creating a sweet tasting drink. It is highly refreshing and depending what is put into the drink, the amount of sugar and calories is negligible. It is a great alternative to someone, like myself, who enjoys store-brought lemon mineral water a fair too much and occasionally the odd lemon and peach ice tea, both in which are very high in sugar despite what they are. This is also great for people who complain  about the taste of water and do not drink enough glasses per day.

Just some of the benefits of infused water:

  • Infusing your water with fruits, herbs, or vegetables not only improves the flavour, but also adds essential vitamins that help your body.
  • The store bought vitamin water is less cost friendly and far less healthy. They often have preservatives, artificial sweeteners and colours, sodium, dextrose, and high fructose corn syrup or refined sugars.
  • Some of the best benefits of having fruit infused water are appetite control, hydration, immune defence, heartburn prevention, blood sugar regulation and weight management.
  • Great alternative to alcoholic beverages
  • Good for increasing your daily water intake
  • Gives a boost of energy, especially good during or after an intense workout
My favourite infused flavour combinations:

  • Lemon
  • Raspberry + Strawberry + Mint
  • Blueberry + Lemon + Rosemary
  • Orange + Cucumber + Lime
  • Kiwi + Watermelon + Sage
  • Lemon + Lime + Ginger
Procedure:
  1. Slice up all fruit and vegetables into small pieces. Tip: cut off the skin on citrus fruits to remove the bitter flavour.
  2. Prepare and wash any herbs being used.
  3. Place ingredients into a large pitcher, tumbler or an air tight jar (mason jars that are found at The Reject Shop from $2 work extremely well for this and they look adorable!)
  4. Using a small wooden spoon or fork, press against the ingredients, allowing for the juices to seep out.
  5. Add in ice and water, soda water can also be used for a fizzy drink alternative.
  6. Let sit for 20 minutes in the fridge
  7. Enjoy your delicious infused water!
